Unravel the Mystery of The Last Express

Published by Brøderbund Software in 1997, The Last Express is a landmark in the adventure game genre that transports players back to July 1914, on the brink of World War I. Designed by Jordan Mechner, famed for creating the “Prince of Persia” series, this game offers a unique real-time experience aboard the legendary Orient Express. With its intricate storyline, deep character development, and immersive atmosphere, it has cemented its place as a beloved classic among adventure game enthusiasts.

An Unforgettable Journey Through Time and Intrigue

In The Last Express, you step into the shoes of Robert Cath, an American doctor with a troubled past. After receiving a mysterious telegram from his friend Tyler Whitney, Cath boards the Orient Express in Paris, only to find Tyler murdered in his compartment. This sets off a chain of events that plunge you into a complex web of murder, political intrigue, and international espionage.

The game unfolds in real-time over three days, with a meticulously crafted schedule of events and character interactions. This dynamic environment means that every decision you make has consequences, and events occur whether you’re present or not. Missing a critical conversation or failing to act at the right moment can alter the course of the story, adding layers of depth and replayability.

As you explore the luxurious train, you’ll interact with over 30 characters from diverse backgrounds, each with their own secrets and motivations. From Russian anarchists plotting a revolution to Austrian violinists harboring hidden agendas, the cast is rich and multifaceted. The dialogue is fully voice-acted, bringing the characters to life and enhancing the immersive experience.

The game’s art style is a standout feature, employing a technique called rotoscoping to create fluid, realistic animations based on live-action footage. Combined with the art nouveau aesthetic and authentic period details, The Last Express vividly recreates the atmosphere of early 20th-century Europe on the cusp of war.
